For the second year running, giving the 18th edition of the festival a boost, are the two major sponsors – Jio and Star. Opening the JIO MAMI this year to a select audience at the newly restored Opera House, will be Konkana Sen Sharma’s (debuting as director) A Death in the Gunj.
Cherry-picked from film festivals around the world, MAMI will showcase the best in Indian and International cinema – features, shorts, documentaries, etc. Vying for honours will be 175 films from 54 countries around the globe, with the focus being on 10 Turkish films. Two new awards have been instituted this year – ‘Gender Equality in Indian cinema’ and ‘Best Female Director in Indian Cinema’.
The Excellence in Cinema Awards (formerly known as Lifetime Achievement Awards) will be bestowed on Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhanke (international cinema) and Sai Paranjpye (Indian cinema). The selection jury for the international segment comprised Anu Rangachary (Head, International Programming), Rashid Irani (senior film critic) and Bhardwaj Rangan (eminent film critic for The Hindu, Chennai).
The Festival Director this year is Anupama Chopra and the Trustees are co-chairpersons Kiran Rao and Nita Ambani, Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Vikram Motwane and Vishal Bhardwaj. Trustee Anurag Kashyap created a ripple among the audience when, after watching the video clips, he declared that the MAMI selection was infinitely better than that of the recently held Toronto International Film Festival! Award-winning Bollywood actor, Kangana Ranaut, also graced the occasion.
