FOZAWAC All-Parsee TT Tournament

Zubin Taraporewalla of Parsee Gymkhana (PG) won yet another singles crown, even as PG maintained its supremacy by lifting 4 of the 6 titles at the 28th FOZAWAC All-Parsee Table Tennis tournament held at the Cusrow Baug pavilion on 11th and 12th February – replicating its feat at the Salsette tournament held last month.

The Open Singles final – the final match of the day – was an all PG affair, with Zubin and Frenaz Chipia playing exhilarating table tennis and enthralling the spectators. In the Doubles Final, top-seeded pair Zubin and Frenaz put it over second-seeds Percy Mehta and Sarosh Shroff. Percy had earlier beaten Sarosh to lift the Veterans title. In the Jumbled Doubles final, the doggedness of Hormuz Pithawala of Cama Park and Rashid Anklesaria of Godrej Baug helped them to prevail over Zubin Taraporewalla and Faizil Pardiwala of Jer Baug over extra points in a thrilling five-setter.
In the newly introduced riveting event – Jumbled Teams – PG’s Zubin Taraporewalla along with Rayomand Farudi and Zaosh Namerian of Cama Park justified their top-seeding by beating the third-seeded team of Frenaz Chipia of PG, Farzad Wadia of Cama Park and Nauzad Munshi of Rustom Baug.

The Teams final saw Parsi Gymkhana (Hoshang Katrak, Zubin Taraporewalla, Frenaz Chipia and Mahzarin Pardiwala) beat traditional arch foes Captain Colony (Percy Mehta, Sarosh Shroff, Nekzad Kerawala and Nauzad Munshi). But it was the Team semi-final on the first day which turned out to be the highlight of the two day tournament. Malcolm Baug found themselves up against PG’s ‘B’ team of Arzan Khambata, Rayomand Marolia, Percy Patel and Homiyar Mohta. With MB youngsters Ushaine Gandhi and Sohrab Mehta beating Arzan and Rayomand in the first two singles, it was left to Rayomand and Homiyar to pull one back in the crucial doubles against Ushaine and Pervez Daruwalla. Rayomand levelled scores by beating Sohrab in the first reverse singles. In the final pulsating match, Arzan lost by a whisker to Ushaine in a gruelling five-setter.

International Chief Referee Datta Salaskar officiated the two-day tournament. Anoz Munshi, President of Ness Wadia Memorial Pavilion gave away the prizes. FOZAWAC thanks Cusrow Baug United Sports and Welfare League for accommodating the event yaerly.
