2016 seems to be a year regarded as one of those during which numerous celebrities lost their lives. The sheer number of celebrity deaths that have piled up over the past 12 months would be farcical if they weren’t so tragic… Since Christmas Day alone, fans have mourned the loss of music super star George Michael and actors Carrie Fisher of Star Wars fame and her mother, Debbie Reynolds, a Hollywood icon immortalized in the film ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, who died just one day after her daughter passed away.
Music icons who surprised and left fans broken hearted also include Prince, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie; Glenn Frey (From the famous band ‘Eagles’ who helped write the hits – ‘Hotel California’ and ‘Life in the Fast Lane’); and Frank Sinatra Jr.
The world of sports lost legends like Muhammad Ali, Gordie Howe and Arnold Palmer; while political figures who passed away include former First Lady Nancy Reagan, Shimon Peres (the former Israeli PM and President); Boutros Boutros-Ghali, (veteran Egyptian diplomat who helped negotiate his country’s landmark peace deal with Israel but clashed with the US when he served a single term as UN Secretary General); Fidel Castro, (the cigar-chomping Cuban revolutionary leader and dictator who defied US’ efforts to topple him for five decades).
Actors who succumbed to 2016 include George Kennedy; Gene Wilder, Doris Roberts (who played the endlessly meddling mother in the popular sitcom ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, Fyvush Finkel (Emmy Award-winning actor who acted in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ on Broadway and on TV in ‘Boston Public’ and ‘Picket Fences’); Zsa Zsa Gabor. Novelist Harper Lee (author of the classic ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’) also bid adieu.
Indian celebrities that passed away in 2016 include legendary politician Jayalalitha, Pratyusha Banerjee, Razak Khan, Sulabha Deshpande and Rajesh Vivek.
