Jamshedi Navroz Celebrations At Parsi Ward, J J Hosp

Continuing the 34-year-long auspicious trend of celebrating Jamshedi Navroz at the Parsi Ward at Sir J.J. Hospital, this year too, on 21st March, 2023, the ward came alive with twinkling lights, flower garlands and chalk decorations. A Jashan ceremony was performed, in remembrance also of the departed souls as also a Tandorosti for the current residents. This was followed by a humbandagi, which was recited by nearly 70 residents present.

The function was graced by some of our most admired community service stalwarts – Yassmin Mistry, daughter of Arnavaz Mistry, welcomed the Dean of J J Hospital – Dr. Supriya Pallavi and Superintendent – Dr. Sanjay Surase, as also Dr. Gustad Davar (ex-Dean), Dr. Rekha Davar (former HOD – Gynecology), Sunita – Head sister, Parsi Ward, the hospital staff and invitees present. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Supriya Pallavi lauded the increase in accommodation capacity of the ward, now at 40+ beds, extending gratitude to Sir JJ and appreciating everyone’s collective efforts.

Khojeste Mistry explained the significance of the Navroz occasion, while BPP Trustee Anahita Desai praised Arnavaz Mistry for her constant dedication, sharing examples of her selfless service to senior citizens, before presenting her a floral bouquet. Zarin Havewala also shared her experience of being influenced by Arnavaz Mistry. All the volunteers, donors were appreciated for their unconditional support provided.

Arnavaz Mistry’s dedication and determination to ensure that every resident is well taken care of, was highlighted. She continues to visit the ward twice a week with much enthusiasm and ensures to put on a smile on everyone’s face, with her bag of goodies (snacks) she distributes during her visits, as also playing fun indoor games with the patients, provides musical entertainment and makes sure hygiene is always maintained. A praiseworthy fact is she knows each resident by their name as also their unique health requirements.

Prioritizing her visits to the Parsi Ward over any other personal commitments, Arnavaz Mistry fondly refers to the patients as her ‘extended family of 42 senior citizens’. Not surprisingly, she has developed a spiritual bond with her service which has only grown stronger with time. “It’s my dream to one day, be able to take under my wing, each and every single senior citizen who has nowhere to go, who has no shelter and is bereft of love and attention from anybody,” shares Arnavaz Mistry, who has dedicated over 4 decades to unwavering community service.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks as the audience dedicated a speech to Arnavaz Mistry, going on to share memories and experiences over yummy snacks.
