The F. S. Parukh Dharamshalla, a home for the aged and a much-needed initiative of the BPP, situated at Khareghat Colony, Hughes Road, is a boon for the senior citizens of our community. 90% of the residents here reside totally free of cost, with all requirements catered including accommodation, meals, clothes, linen, diapers, toiletries, laundry services, services of barber, etc. Medications prescribed by Doctors, specially appointed to take care of the Dharamshalla’s senior citizens, are also supplied free of cost, as is medical equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, surgical beds, side-tables; and hospitalization, if required (at the BD Petit Parsee General Hospital).  

Many senior residents need constant supervision and help with basic tasks like bathing and usage of the toilet. Some are immobile and restricted to their beds. The Dharamshalla’s capacity houses about 100 residents, of which some are Paying Residents and are provided a separate room in addition to all the mentioned facilities, at a nominal monthly cost of Rs. 7,000/- (not inclusive of care-taker/ ward-boy/ ayah expenses). Television sets in each ward are installed for the entertainment of the residents and monthly entertainment programmes are also organized to keep up their spirits. 

Residents are housed in two separate wings for men and women. Maintenance and hygiene also levies a huge expense for the upkeep as well as repairs and maintenance of two lifts, furniture, fixtures, electricity bills and appliances, etc. Huge funds are needed for smooth and efficient functioning of a Home of this magnitude, including the salaries of staff, includes a Doctor, nurses, Manager, Assistant Manager, Supervisor, Cooks, Ayahs, Ward boys, liftman, etc. The residents are provided wholesome, nutritious meals. Some meals are sponsored by our donors. 

All the above facilities are taken care of with the support of BPP and generous donors. A Ladies Advisory Committee looks after the needs of the residents and oversees the running of the Dharamshalla. The Committee members, Managers and support staff ensure that the sunset years of residents are their ‘golden years’, spent with respect, dignity and caring.
