The ongoing Metro III (Colaba- Bandra- SEEPZ) work at DN Road in South Mumbai faced yet another backlash from the heritage structures officials who received complaints from one of the city’s oldest libraries, JN Petit Library. The Mumbai Heritage Conversation Committee has confirmed receiving a complaint from the library against Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) who have proposed the entry and exit point for the Hutatma Chowk Station, on the area of Petit’s garden, which will result in the library losing a part of its garden along with a tree. However, the library authorities are more worried about the ‘cut and cover’ method adopted by the MMRCL to construct the station which is the main reason for damage to heritage buildings on DN Road, which have shallow and conventional spread foundations.
The heritage buildings which stand on a sandy shallow layer have been experiencing tremors due to the ongoing work. The Association further alleges that no monitoring devices have been installed to gauge the vibration felt in the heritage buildings whereas, the same was promised to be installed prior to the commencement of work, which is 25th May, 2017.
