In today’s fast-paced times and lifestyles that thrive on stress and habits which don’t do just to the mind or the body, longevity is a rarity. But it is more than heartening to note that Menie Maiji had daringly defied the odds! Celebrating her glorious 104th birthday on 23rd January, 2020, amidst much pomp and merriment, one of our oldest living Zoroastrians – Menie Kaikhushroo Bhagat – was a picture of happiness and excitement at her birthday bash, held in Mumbai by her loved ones! By the grace of Ahura Mazda, Menie Bhagat continues to boast of good physical and mental fitness (known for her crystal clear memory!) and lives a happy life, independently, despite her age.
Born in Bina (Madhya Pradesh) to mother – Goolbai and father – Bejonji Pestonji of Jhansi, who worked as an engine-driver, Menie Bhagat grew up in Jhansi as one of nine siblings and the only surviving one, currently. Born in 1916 during World War I, she has seen the world change and generations go past, ideas, ideologies and ethics evolve and get redefined; she has truly seen and been part of our Indian history, especially in Jhansi. She has spent memorable days under different ruling governments.
Well into her 70s, her large family of brothers and sisters lived close by in Jhansi Railway Colony, spending decades together with siblings, all loved and cared for uncles and aunts in a loving, large family environment. Menie is mother of late son and daughter – Jimmy Bhagat and Hanita Dadabhoy Wadia, respectively; her other children – Minoo Bhagat and Zarine Rony Dick (Mumbai) and Rosy Jimmy Rustomjee (USA) joined in for her 104th birthday celebrations.
With a large number of grand and great grandchildren around her and living overseas, she has shared her love and great family spirit and imparted the same in her predecessors. It has been a tough but happy life for her, seeing three generations of family serve the Indian Railways as engine drivers and winning accolades. Later on, the younger generation of family left Jhansi for Mumbai and is presently spread around the globe.
Her gentle, helpful and loving nature endures her to all. When Parsi Times asked Manimai about the secret of her never-ending positivity and great health, she said, gracefully and gratefully, “It is Ahura Mazda’s blessing on me – I’m not worried about anything. I live my life day to day and I stay happy and content with whatever I have.” Simple yet enduring thoughts for all to learn from!
On 23rd January, over thirty-five close family members and loved ones joined in to usher in her 104th birthday amidst much bonhomie and happiness, with everyone unanimously, proudly and lovingly saying, “She’s our ‘Jhansi ki Raani’! She will guide and bless us always!”
We wish Menie
Maiji excellent health and happiness always!
