Parsee Gym Holds 6th All Zoroastrian Arm Wrestling Competition

The sixth edition of the much anticipated All Zoroastrian Arm Wrestling Competition was held on the grounds of the Parsee Gymkhana, on 20th January, 2024, displaying much Parsi passion and brawn as 62 (50 male and 12 female) of our community’s strongest came to battle it out for the top spot.

Right from the youngest participant – 12-year-old Jehan Daver to the oldest – 86-year-old Darius Master, and from the lightest participant to the heaviest, the spirit of competition was fierce and the show of sheer strength was incredible! Geography posed no challenge with an impressive Ahmedabad contingent comprising five participants, alongside two from Dahanu and one from Udwada. The event, and all its elaborate preparations to ensure its resounding success, was perfectly executed by Rustom Jasoomoney, Hoshang Katrak, Adi Pardiwala and the helpful PG staff, under the leadership of President Mehli Golvala. The main sponsors of the event were Justice Shahrukh J. Kathawalla, WZO Trusts and Lt. Er. Burjor Antia. The evening was ably compared by Hutoxi Doodhwalla, alongside Yazmeen Contractor.

Sports icon, Olympian and entrepreneur – Adille Sumariwalla presided as the Chief Guest for the evening. A former athlete and sports virtuoso, as also the founder of multiple media businesses, Adille Sumariwalla represented India at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and won the gold medal at the 1984 South Asian Federation Games. A 22 times National Gold medallist, Adille was awarded the Arjuna Award for excellence in Athletics (1985) and has received innumerable honours since. He has coached India’s top sportspersons. He also served as Chair of the World Athletics for the Age Manipulation Committee.

In addition to being a versatile actor having shared her talent in Bollywood as also in several regional films, Guest of Honour – Preeti Jhangiani is a leading personality in the Indian Arm-wrestling arena, having co-founded the ‘Pro Panja League’ (2020), currently the world’s biggest Armwrestling league. She’s the president of People’s Armwrestling Federation India.

The evening was charged as onlookers cheered on their favourite contestants with much passion. One of the most captivating highlights was a breathtaking ‘Body Beautiful’ demonstration by Kaiwan Randelia – National Junior Gold Medalist 2023 and holder of the Bharat Shree 2023 title. The results included Meherzad Chinoy winning the coveted Champion of Champions title for the sixth consecutive time, while Safna Doctor snagged the Women’s Championship title and Malcolm Baug lifted the Team Championship trophy.
