The Global Community of Zoroastrians Trust (GCZT) recently held its Annual General Meeting in Mumbai, on 2nd February, 2025, attended by Trustees, Settlors, Advisors and other invitees. It was conducted by Trustee and representative of GCZT – Meher Bhesania, under the Chairmanship of Neville Shroff, who is also the Chairman of the Hongkong Association.
The highlight of the programme was a series of inspirational speeches delivered by four prominent Zoroastrian leaders. The first speaker was legendary industrialist, Nadir Godrej, who, in his signature poetic style, emphasized the importance of community service and reviving the glorious heritage of the Zoroastrian community. Interestingly, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the World Zarathushti Chamber of Commerce (WZCC), which he had inaugurated on December 28, 2000, in Houston, also through a poetic address.
Next, distinguished lawyer, Darayus Khambatta shared insights into the work of the Tata Trusts and his experiences working with the late Ratan Tata. He emphasized the importance of moderation and accommodating diverse perspectives to ensure community welfare. Celebrated Ahmedabad-based industrialist, Piruz Khambatta followed with a speech filled with practical suggestions on monetizing unused community properties, especially in rural Gujarat. He proposed utilizing these funds for community welfare, poverty alleviation, and supporting Mobeds. Prominent surgeon Dr. Keki Turel delivered the final address, focusing on health, well-being, and the enhancement of both mind and spirit for people of all ages.
Prior to these engaging speeches, the AGM acknowledged the contributions of eminent solicitor Burjor Antia, recognizing his dedication to bringing the GCZT to fruition and his significant efforts in making a key health insurance project successful. Yazdi Tantra presented the Secretary’s Report, while Treasurer Sam Balsara provided an update on GCZT’s financial standing.
The focus then shifted to youth initiatives, with discussions on fostering career opportunities and engagement. The three advisors on youth affairs – Arzan Wadia (FEZANA), Homiar Madan (WZOTFI), and Dorab Mistry (ZTFE) – were introduced. Presentations were made by Pashan Khosrawi, Kimiya Shahzadi, and Arash Chothia, representing the Zoroastrian Youth of North America. Additionally, Dr. Zal Canteenwala spoke on behalf of the Young Zoroastrians of the UK’s ZTFE, and Hoshang Gotla shared insights into the XYZ youth organization in India. Behnaz Nanavutti, the new youth director on the WZCC International Board, also addressed the audience. Reports from regional representatives, were presented, digitally and in person.
After lunch, attendees viewed an insightful film by Meher Bhesania, outlining GCZT’s five key verticals for the year. Yazdi Tantra then introduced the ‘Z Funds Portal’ (www.zfunds.org), designed to facilitate applications for education and medical assistance. Later, Cyrus Driver spoke about the upcoming World Zoroastrian Congress in Singapore (December 2026), while BPP Chairman, Viraf Mehta and his team discussed the 9th World Zoroastrian Youth Congress, hosted by ZYNG, set to take place in Mumbai in 2027.
A key session, moderated by Trustee Sam Balsara, reviewed GCZT’s major projects, focusing on health insurance for the needy, youth development, and financial support for Mobeds. Noshir Dadrawala emphasized the importance of giving back to the community through time, talent, and financial resources. The following day, discussions continued at the Dadar Athornan Madressa, where Dinshaw Tamboly and his team presented a paper on Empowering Mobeds. The discussion centered around financial insecurity and low recruitment in the Mobed profession, leading to further deliberations on potential solutions.
This landmark AGM was distinguished by inspiring speeches and a clear focus on youth development, health insurance, and financial support for Mobeds. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks to the organizers, particularly Burjorji Antia, Neville Shroff, the Settlors, Trustees, Advisors of GCZT, and regional representatives of the Global Working Group.
