Meher Yazad

Daisy P. Navdar is a teacher by profession and a firm believer in the efficacy of our Manthravani. She is focused on ensuring that the deep significance of our prayers is realized by our youth. She credits her learnings and insights, shared in her articles, to all Zoroastrian priests and scholars whose efforts have contributed towards providing light and wisdom for all Zarthostis.

‘Ring the bells that still can ring,

Forget your perfect offering;

There is a crack in everything,

That’s how the light gets in!’

– Leonard Cohen

In the normal course of our daily prayers, we pray the Khorshed Nyaish and Meher Nyaish together, as they are the mandatory daily prayers that we must offer. Every facet of our faith is linked in an intrinsic pattern with the patterns and vibrations of the entire universe.

Khorshed Yazad is the vibrant Sun and Meher Yazad is the light or radiance of the Sun. Today, we know that it is only the light and heat of the Sun that sustains all plant and animal life on our planet. We even experience disturbances on Earth when there are Solar flares on the Sun.

Ancient sages meditated for thousands of years with no form of food or sustenance. They drew upon the vast energy of the Sun to sustain them and clothed themselves with our mother Earth. When we invoke the blessings of Meher Yazad, we pray to Ahura Mazda for His Divine Light for strength in body and mind, for upliftment of our soul and progress of our existence in the physical as well as in the spiritual world.

Given below are a few lines from the Meher Nyaish, which explain the role of this most divine Yazad of Pak Dadar Ahura Mazda:

‘Acha no jamyat avanghe’ – May God’s Light Help and Protect us
‘Acha no jamyat ravanghe’ – May God’s Light bring us Freedom
‘Acha no jamyat rafanghe’ – May God’s Light bring us Joy and Happiness
‘Acha no jamyat marzdikhai’ – May God’s Light bring us Mercy and Forgiveness
‘Acha no jamyat baeshazai’ – May God’s Light bring Healing
‘Acha no jamyat verethraghnai’ – May God’s Light bring us Victory in Life
‘Acha no jamyat havanghai’ – May God’s Light bring us Well Being and Prosperity
‘Acha no jamyat ashavastai’ – May God’s Light bring us Righteousness and Truth
‘Ughro, aiwithuro, yasnao, vahmayo’ – Strong, Powerful, Worthy of Reverence and Praise
‘Anaiwi-drukhto vispemai anghuhe astavaite’ – Undeceivable in the entire world
‘Mithro yo vouru gayaoitish Mithra’ – (Heavenly Light) the protector of the
world

I know that it seems a very long prayer to daily pray the Khorshed Nyaish and Meher Nyaish after the Sarosh Baaj, but it is a practice that has tremendous benefits for our mind, body and soul. Let us harness the powers of the Sun and imbibe its brilliance through Meher Yazad!
