Neuro Rehabilitation Center For Community Members at Masina Hospital

In its recent Parsi/Irani Zoroastrian Community initiative, aimed at addressing the rising incidents of neurological issues in the community, the Global Council of Zoroastrian Trusts (GCZT) launched the much-needed ‘Neuro Rehabilitation Center’, supported by Masina Hospital, on 12th September, 2024, in the Masina Hospital Campus.

The inaugural function was graced by prominent persons, alongside Chief Guest, Dr. Burjor Antia – Senior Trustee, Masina Hospital Trust and Founder Trustee, GCZT; as also Dr. Rati Godrej and Homi Katgara – Advisors to GCZT overlooking healthcare initiatives for our community, Dr. Gustad Davar Surgeon and Trustee, Masina Hospital; and Khushrow Major – CEO, Masina Hospital Trust. Also gracing the occasion were Noshir Dadrawala from Center for Advanced Philanthropy and Advisor to Masina Hospital Trust and GCZT, Arnavaz Mistry esteemed social worker and former BPP trustee; and doctors and Masina Hospital staff.

Khushrow Major welcomed the guests, stating that the establishment of a Neuro Rehabilitation Center at Masina Hospital was a crucial step in addressing the healthcare needs of the aging community in Mumbai. He said this initiative by GCZT aligns with Masina Hospital Trust’s long-standing commitment to serve the Zoroastrian/Irani community, maintaining its legacy as a premier charitable healthcare institution in Mumbai.

Dr. Gustad Daver explained how many ageing community members were likely to suffer from progressive neurological disorders, which occur after Vascular strokes, head injuries or simply being part of the spectrum of degenerative neurological disorders. “Besides, Dementia and Alzheimer also affects this ageing population. Therefore, this centre offers rehabilitation services to enable patients to significantly improve their functional capability and quality of life. Another feature of this centre is to train the care-givers to continue the same level of care at home,” he added.

Dr. Petras Wadia, part of the think tank for this project, stated the community could significantly benefit from the services provided at this centre. He believed providing intense professional expert care for a few months in this setting was far better than trying to replicate the same in the home environment.

Dr. Rati Godrej expressed her pleasure on the launch of this initiative by Masina Hospital Trust. She stated how such Neuro and Neuro-Psychiatry disorders place huge financial burdens onto the family / caregivers in the community. Training caregivers would be very helpful in mitigating this burden, she shared. She was delighted with the facility and wished the hospital success in this laudable venture.

Homi Katgara spoke about Masina Hospital and its role in Mumbai’s healthcare scenario underlining its significant contributions in the fields of Mental Healthcare and various departments for Burns, Cardiology, CVTS Surgery, Intensive care, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Onco-surgery, Neurosurgery and Minimal invasive Laproscopic Surgery.  He thanked Mani Bhathena for her generous donation given in memory of her sister, late Ruby Bhathena, which helped upgrade the physiotherapy department, greatly benefitting the patients.

Dr. Burjor Antia spoke of Masina Hospital Trust’s long tradition of services and how the GCZT was formed as an umbrella body to support the various needs of the community, with healthcare initiatives including the possibility of providing Medical Insurance to the whole community and this Neuro Rehabilitation project, which he said was a global facility that worldwide community members should avail of.
