Dear Readers,
I believe I speak for us all when I say it’s disparaging as a self-respecting community to make it into the national dailies for the wrong reasons. It is expected, even healthy, for any community to have its members holding on to differing viewpoints and beliefs over various issues – we are, after all, regarded as the nation’s most educated and progressive community. There will always be conflicting perspectives between our well-meaning, free-thinking factions with regard to beliefs and solutions on eclectic aspects. Needless to say, the more integral the aspect, the more intense the reaction. However, making an unnecessary show of our internal discord in the national media, not only further fuels the conflict, but ends up tarnishing more than just our impeccable reputation… it gnaws at our very legacy.
We also need to grow a sense social media responsibility and accountability. Unmonitored social media platforms guarantee zero truthfulness of information or related consequences, and yet we continue to irresponsibly forward every controversial, spiced-up or fabricated piece of misinformation, especially one that brings down our own people, our own causes or events… under the garb of being the equally misinformed ‘protectors of our faith’.
How long before we realise, that we lower a lot more than our own stand when we pull down others, that we can only rise and become strong as a community by lifting others, not bringing them down. The way to resolve differences is with discussions based on the premise of truth, or alternatively, we could simply and respectfully agree to disagree, instead of resorting to making sensational and untrue claims on unfiltered social media premises, which diminishes our reputation as a respected and learned community.
Maybe it’s time to get back to the basics and re-learn by gleaning the thoughts, words and deeds of our ancestors. And maybe then, will we learn to unite and speak in one voice as opposed to bringing each other down; maybe then will we learn humility and discard the garb of self-righteousness; maybe then will we have earned the prodigious inheritance of our extraordinary predecessors. Wot?
Have a good weekend!
