Navsari’s Sorabji Barjorji Garda College Enters 78th Year

Sorabji Barjorjo Garda College, based in Navsari and one of the oldest educational institutions of the South Gujarat region, was established in 1945, when Parsi philanthropist – Sorabji Burjorji Garda, donated a generous sum of Rs. 2,00,000/- with the objective of imparting education to all students, without any distinction of caste or creed or nationality, except that preference therein, be given to Parsis.
The first section of this college was built on 18th June, 1945, 78 years ago, thanks to the munificence of the Garda family. Since there was no provision of higher education in Navsari at the time, students had to go to Surat or Mumbai for further studies, and girls didn’t have much of an option at all for further education, as the idea of travel and staying away from home for studies was not acceptable then.
With these concerns, philanthropist Sorabji Garda decided to provide the academic facility of Graduation in Navsari, when he was approached for donation. This institute takes pride to be the first institution in the South Gujarat region to offer the widest range of subjects. The departments for various subjects – Gujarati, Sanskrit, Persian and Economics were established in the very first year of its inception i.e 1945. Over the years the college has earned a name for its excellence in the fields of academics, cultural activities, sports, NSS, NCC and other Co-curricular and Extra-Curricular activities. The institute has gained a wide repute through its extension activities and community services.
Salutations to Navsari Gaurav Sami Danveer Seth Sorabji Garda for helping construct this college – which pioneered the path of modern education in Navsari, not just for Parsis, but for the local Navsari community. It’s in-depth history is proudly covered by the Heritage walks conducted in collaboration with ParZor Foundation, Parsi Cultural Division of Garda Collage Trust & INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage).
