The first weekend of the Community’s most awaited ‘All-Parsi Sports, Cultural and Talent Festival’ – Wings’19 kicked off in great style, on the 9th of November, 2019, with some of the most intense, thrilling clashes witnessed between high-energy participants, surprising upsets and games that went all the way down to the wire! To be held across two weekends during its fourth chapter, (9th and 10th, as well as 15th, 16th and 17th of November) WINGS’19’ – which is being held at the Rustom Baug Grounds in association with the Sir Ness Wadia Memorial Pavilion and Parsi Times as Media Partner – hosted around a 1,000 people over the weekend dated 9-10th of this month, and efficiently conducted 500 games, within the span of just 15 hours!!
WINGS’19 – the biggest sports and cultural event of the community – is living up to its promise of delivering an even bigger and better experience to the community than ever – hosting over 15 exciting events; with over 250 team registrations and 800 individual registrations!! The following is the overview of what transpired during the first weekend of WINGS’19 – the Community’s most thrilling, sporting and entertaining event ever – and what you can expect during this – its mega-thrilling and concluding weekend Finale:
Football: The group stage games of football came to an end on the first weekend, with 16 of the 32 teams going through to the Round of 16. Petit, the defending champions, faced an upset – losing unexpectedly to a sprightly team of 14-year-olds from Dadar – and crashing out of the tournament in the group stages. Rustom Baug ‘A’; DPCG ‘A’; Cusrow Baug ‘A’ and Cama Park are some of the teams that went through to the knockout stages. The Quarters, Semis and Finals will take place on Saturday, 16th November.
Cricket: The box cricket tournament also witnessed some major upsets, as team CJ ‘A’ – last year’s finalists – lost in the group stage. DPCG ‘A’, last year’s Semi-finalists also struggled and lost to Behram Baug ‘A’. The group stage matches will continue this weekend with Quarters, Semis and Finals to be held on Sunday, 17th November.
Badminton: The exhilarating Baddy tournament at WINGS’19 witnessed stars like Jehan Daboo, Nevile Katila, Burzin Engineer gracing the court. The tourney saw some great fixtures, the best of which was between Nauheed and Vishtaspa. A nail-biting match that saw young, flexible Vishtaspa overcome by a veteran woman’s badminton player – Nauheed Divecha.
Table Tennis: The 100-participants-strong table tennis tournament observed some magical matches between players across the city – many having played at State and National levels. Zubin Taraporwala, the best player in the community, emerged as the winner of his Pool with ease. Veterans Hoshang Katrak and Homi Motta were also present. Soli Mehta, the winner of Table Tennis at WINGS’17 beat Homi Motta to emerge winner in his pool. The Quarters, Semis and Finals will be played on Sunday, 17th November.
Indirect Volleyball: This game brought up yet another upset – with DPC SWA, winners of WINGS’16 lose in the very first round to Malcolm Baug; Nawroze Baug ‘A’ and Godrej Baug went through to the Semi-finals, which will be played on 16th November.
The 2nd Weekend at WINGS’19 Promises Extreme Excitement!!!
Saturday, 16th November, will host the Quarters, Semis and Finals of the Football and Badminton tournaments, as well as the Indirect Volleyball tournament. Early round matches will be held in the table tennis court and on the cricket pitch.
One of the top highlights of WINGS’19 – the Midnight Car Treasure Hunt – will commence at 12:00 am and end at 2:00 am, and will be held across South Mumbai. The WINGS’19 Midnight Treasure Hunt, which has registered over 40 teams hunting 12 boggling clues and chasing 12 crazy tasks across South Mumbai – will need to be completed by contestants within 2 hours!
The ‘WINGS’19 GRAND FINALE’ That You JUST CAN’T MISS!!! Sunday, 17th November, marks the day of the event’s most looked forward to Grand Finale!! The newly formed All-Bawa band – ‘The Right Left Wings’ – comprising some of the most talented singers of our community, namely Shazneen Arethna, Hormuz Ragina, Delraaz Bunshah and Arish Bhiwandiwala – will debut and perform live for the very first time as a band! The incredibly gifted band has put together some of the most foot-stomping numbers to perform, which is guaranteed to drive the crowed insane with excitement! The best singers of the community will belt out a mix of some of the best classics as well as contemporary hits from 2019, with something for everyone to jump up and dance to! There is NO ENTRY BARRIER OR FEE and the show is open to all who wish to celebrate talent in the community and enjoy quality entertainment. The Grand Finale will be held at the Rustom Baug Grounds and will begin at 7:00 pm. Preceding the Finale, a J.A.M will be hosted by the vivacious Hormuz Ragina – the number 1 J.A.M master in the community.
The Community’s topmost All-Parsi event, WINGS’19, is the brainchild of dynamic, young Founders – Zaara Dastur, Anahita Karanjia and Jeyhaan Carnac. WINGS’19 marks the fourth super-successful chapter of this extravaganza. As has been the case since its inception in 2016 (WINGS’16), the Community’s leading Newsweekly, PARSI TIMES, is the Media Partner of this spectacular event, that has over the years, earned great praise from Community members and celebrities alike!
