Reversing Type 2 Diabetes – Yes, It’s Possible!

PT reader, Hurmaz Patel shares his inspiring journey marking the success of reversing his Type 2 Diabetes, under the expert care and guidance of PT columnist, Dr. Trishala Chopra.

Diabetes is the condition which causes high levels of blood sugar or glucose. Diabetes is often referred to as a “silent killer” because in its initial stages, there are usually no noticeable symptoms and people are caught quite unaware that they have it, until they experience some serious complications as a consequence of diabetes, like damage to the kidneys, eyes or nerves.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, is linked to lifestyle, in particular, obesity, sedentary jobs, lack of exercise etc. But there’s hope for you if you’re diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes – it is reversible! Meet Hurmaz Dali Patel, a handsome, 43-year-old professor from Navsari, who successfully managed to beat and reverse Type 2 diabetes, after connecting with Parsi Times columnist, Dr. Trishala Chopra, known for her expertise in treating Diabetes, Obesity, Hormonal Imbalances,

Teaching management at the Udhna Citizen College, Navsari, Hurmaz lived with Type 2 diabetes for over a decade, which he admits was a result of an unhealthy lifestyle. “I did try to control it by dieting and going to the gym for a few months, but these changes were not sustainable in the long run,” he shares. It reached a point where his blood sugar levels were in the dangerous range of 300-350, accompanied by physical issues like, joint pains, extreme weakness and frequent urination at night.

Once, when visiting Mumbai for a Navjote, he happened to bump into his friend’s daughter, Kainaz Ukaji, after several years and was absolutely amazed by her transformation, who she had lost close to 40 kgs, all thanks to Dr. Trishala Chopra. So, in November 2024, post-Diwali, Hurmaz contacted Dr Trishala who, “Confidently told me that she would help me control my diabetes within three months.” Through her on-line consultations, Dr. Trishala expertly provided Hurmaz the necessary tweaks and changes in his lifestyle and diet.

“She gave me an easy-to-follow diet chart and I never had to starve. Though, of course, to gain something you have to give up somethings – I had to reduce my carbohydrate intake and replace it with more proteins.” Today, three months later, Hurmaz is successfully off all medication (except on the rare occasions when he has binged on sweets), and is able to keep diabetes at bay by just controlling his diet.

Dr. Trishala shared that the magic lies in working with patients within the ambit of what is reasonable and sustainable for them. “In Hurmaz’s case, he was travelling long distances for work, eating canteen food, so I had to give him diet options based on that,” shares Dr Trishala. The aim, especially if blood sugar levels are as high as 300, is to get that under control with medication, but then wean the patient off the meds. “The patient is the one in the driver’s seat, I’m the one giving the directions. As their guide, I have to give them convenient options,” says Dr. Trishala.

During Hurmaz’s consultations, they realised that of all the meals, dinner was completely within his control, and as for lunch, he cut down his usual large portion of rice and opted for proteins. She suggested he play cricket, a sport he loves, which would give him exercise and joy. The happy conclusion to Hurmaz’s case is that his blood sugar levels are now in control, he no longer suffers from joint pain and can finally sleep through the night, undisturbed.

DIABETES FACT FILE

  • India is the world’s leading nations affected by Diabetes, with one in four diabetics, globally, is from India
  • In November 2024, 212 million Indians were diagnosed with diabetes.
  • Approximately, 90–95% of Indians with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes

Throwing some light on Type 1 Diabetes, Dr. Trishala shares that Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune type of disease, which cannot be reversed, unlike Type 2 Diabetes. “We all have the possibility of developing Type 2 diabetes,” she likens it to pulling the trigger of a gun… “It’s in our hands, which is why Type 2 Diabetes can also be entirely reversed.” She recommends her patients to first get their ‘Fasting C-Peptide’ test done, which ascertains the type of diabetes they have. Based on these results, she guides them to good health.

And her methods are certainly effective. Take it from the horse’s mouth – Hurmaz, who says, “I am truly grateful for her guidance which she draws from her immense knowledge. The best part is she is your coach all through the journey – always checking up on me on a regular basis. And whenever I write to her with a query on WhatsApp, she replies promptly. I feel blessed with this renewed chance at life!”
