“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” These were the famous words by the great Chinese teacher and philosopher, Confucius.Things are easier said than done. For some children, returning to school can be stressful. But one should look forward to getting back to school. Here are a few tips that will help you get your groove back after the vacations:
Ten tips to get back in school mode are:
- Set new goals for yourself -be it social, intellectual or sports.
- Aim to get better marks and percentage.
- Go through your past assignments.
- Connect with teachers you relate to.
- Take some time to get in the school mode once again.
- Adjust your sleeping patterns.
- Pack your school bag and clothes the night before.
- Eat healthy to be in the right frame of mind.
- Ensure there is time daily for physical exercise.
- Commit to being punctual – discipline always helps.
Students have lots of memorising to do in school – be it learning and remembering formulas or solving and remembering equations in chemistry or math.
Here are ten tips to remember and retain formulas:
- Go through the formula in advance before you study the chapter in detail.
- Don’t memorise a lot of formulas before you understand them.
- Memorise the formula, revise before teachers, and practice with friends or recite them before a mirror.
- Use different memory systems like visualisation, link system, classification or groupism.
- Keep your books and notes in place.
- Minimise your reference check. Practice solving a problem with the formula without looking it up. You must do this as many times as you can. Repetition leads to memorization.
- Relax the mind and body via yoga and meditation.
- Eat well and sleep adequately.
- Each time you learn a new formula that tells you how to compute one quantity in terms of other quantities, get a friend to randomly pick one of the formulae you previously learned in your course and describe it. If three hours are not yet up, randomly pick one of the formulae they haven’t already picked and struggle to recall it until you get it right and keep going until whichever comes first of using up all the formulae. Each time you do that, you will make yourself better at extracting weaker memories back into your consciousness making it easier to learn formulae in the future.
- Never give up, thinking the equation or the formula as very tough.
