True to form, Parsee Gymkhana (PG) bagged top honours at the 2-day FOZAWAC All-Parsee Table Tennis Tournament held at the Cusrow Baug pavilion on 26th and 27th January, 2019. PG’s Zubin Taraporewalla prevailed in the Open Singles, helping PG win the team title, partnered Mahzarin Pardiwalla to annex the Open Doubles. Rayomand Marolia’s wards from Godrej Baug shone bright in the 2-day tournament. The young turks, led by Ardaviraf Motiwalla, shocked Cama Park in the Team Quarterfinals before upsetting Sarosh Shroff’s team in the semis. 56-year-old Sarosh of Godrej and Boyce won both games, but Godrej Baug finally stormed into the Team Finals to face top-seeded PG.
This year’s highlight was the round-robin league in the Open Singles qualifying event – a first in an All-Parsee TT tournament. Farokh Khodaiji, whose international ranking of 25 has not been surpassed by any Indian player till now, was the Chief Guest, along with wife Katy. He emphasised the importance of dedication to the game and stressed that TT was a full-time vocation requiring hours of daily practice. FOZAWAC thanks Cusrow Baug for lending their pavilion for the event.
