Teen Swimming Champ Shahaan Tavadia’s Third Bay Triumph

While most steer clear of the icy, fast-moving waters of San Francisco Bay, 15-year-old Shahaan Tavadia dives right in – literally! The BASIS Phoenix 10th grader recently completed his third consecutive, open-water swim, from Alcatraz Island to the San Francisco shore, including the challenging Golden Gate Bridge crossing. Since his first crossing in 2023, he’s returned each year, driven by a passion for water sports and a heart full of determination.

The annual two-day event tests even the most seasoned swimmers, with freezing temperatures and unpredictable currents. For Shahaan, it’s more than a race – it’s a ritual of courage and discipline. In addition to being an ace swimmer, Shahaan is also a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo, an active participant in Speech and Debate and DECA. Blending courage with community spirit, he recently took on the role of Secretary at the Zoroastrian Association of Arizona (ZAAZ).

Born in India and settled in New River, Arizona, Shahaan remains grounded and humble about his achievements. “I’ll be back next year,” he shares – proof that for him, each stroke through the bay is a step forward in greater accomplishments and purpose.
