Dr. Mahrukh Bamji Appointed Chair – Paediatrics Dept. At Metropolitan Hospital, NY City

On 4th February, 2021, Christopher A. Roker, Chief Executive of the Metropolitan Hospitals, New York City, announced that the appointment of Dr. Mahrukh Bamji, MD, as Chair of the Department of Paediatrics at the NYCHHC / Metropolitan Hospital.

Dr. Bamji commands a versatile career at Metropolitan as a senior clinician, an able administrator, a researcher, and an educator. She is the Professor of Clinical Paediatrics at New York Medical College, Board-certified in Paediatrics and in Paediatric Hospital Medicine. At Metropolitan, she has served across a number of leadership positions, including Deputy Chief of Paediatrics and Chief of Paediatrics Inpatient. She has also been the hospital’s Director of Paediatric AIDS services.

She is nationally recognized as a researcher in Paediatric AIDS. She has been the recipient of several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC) Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the New York State AIDS Institute. She was the site Principal Investigator (PI) for the CDC-funded maternal infant transmission study, and for over thirty NIH-funded clinical trials, including the landmark study of prevention of perinatal transmission of HIV Infection, which changed the trajectory of the paediatric AIDS epidemic. Dr. Bamji has also been the recipient of several teaching awards.

 Dr. Mahrukh Bamji resides with husband, Dinshaw, in New York State where they are active members of ZAGNY.
