Naheed Divecha Wins Double Crowns In All-India Racketlon Championship

Naheed Divecha, ace shuttler from Greater Mumbai, won the Women’s Singles crown in the 2nd All-India Open Racketlon Championship, which was held at the Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (WCG). Representing Bombay Gymkhana, Naheed played at the WCG courts in Santacruz (Mumbai), alongside over 70 players who participated in the Championship, from across the country.

The highly-accomplished and experienced Naheed encountered a solid challenge from Coimbatore’s 15-year-old Aadirai, before managing to get through to the ‘Golden’ tie-breaker, 68-67 as the total scores, after the four events (Table-tennis, Badminton, Squash and Tennis) were deadlocked at 67-All (19-21, 21-4, 17-21, 11-21).

A renowned badminton player, Naheed narrowly lost the opening Table tennis tie 19-21, but returned to totally dominate the Badminton event, winning by a large 21-4 margin to gain a sizeable 40-23 lead. Aadira fought back by winning the remaining two events – Squash (21-17) and Tennis (21-11) and thus levelled the scores, leading to the ‘Golden’ tie-breaker. Naheed, in her elements and great form, won the crucial match-deciding point, snagging the well-deserved 68-67 verdict and emerging as champion!

Naheed also won the Mixed Doubles title, paired with Ashutosh Pednekar, to defeat the second-seeded combination of Roma Dutia and Adit B Patel by a narrow 60-59 (15-21, 21-6, 21-11, 3-21) points difference in the final.

Parsi Times had reported Naheed Divecha’s earlier achievements, where she pulled off an amazing set of three back-to-back wins at the MBA (Maharashtra Badminton Association) Senior State Veteran’s Championship (December 2018), winning in the ‘45+ Women Singles’; ‘Women’s Doubles’ and ‘Mixed Doubles’ categories; as well as scoring two Gold Medals and one Silver Medal at the 43rd Indian Masters (Veteran) Nationals Badminton 2018-19 (February, 2019). “Remaining fit and strong, and mentally challenging myself outside my comfort zone, is what keeps me going!” said the victorious Naheed. Here’s wishing her the very best! More power to her!! And lots more wins!!
