2017 Starts Off With Parsi Pride Brigade!

Padma Bhushan For Dr. Tehemton Udwadia!

Leading the Parsi Pride Brigade in 2017, the renowned and much respected Dr. Tehemton Erach Udwadia, known as the Father of Laparoscopy in India, has been awarded India’s third-highest civilian award – the prestigious Padma Bhushan. The Indian Government officially announced the name of Mumbai’s Dr. Tehemton Udwadia in its list of Padma Bhushan awardees on the 25th of January, 2017, on the eve of Republic Day. Dr. Udwadia has earlier been honored with the Padma Shri in 2006 for his contributions to Indian medicine.

80-year-old Dr. Udwadia is a surgical gastroenterologist who pioneered Laparoscopic (or comparatively non-invasive) Surgery in India in 1972, in addition to being the first surgeon in the world to perform Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in 1990. He practices at Mumbai’s Breach Candy and PD Hinduja Hospitals. He is known for his passion for teaching, love for students and his compassion for patients.
