Parsi Gate At Marine Drive To Be Restored By January 2024

One of the Parsi community’s most revered sites in Mumbai – the Parsi Gate, located at Marine Drive, which was removed in April 2021 for the BMC’s ambitious Coastal Road works, is slated to be placed back by January next year, before the Coast Road is made operational, as per civic officials. The Parsi Gate, would however, be relocated around 75 metres ahead (north direction) of its original location (earlier opposite the Savitribai Phule Girls Hostel at Charni Road, which will now be shifted 75 metres towards Girgaon). It’s character and steps going towards the sea have been kept as is.

The holy Parsi Gate was temporarily removed in 2020 to build the coastal road project by MCGM, who had assured the community that its pillars would will be resurrected in the same place or close to its original location, once the project was completed. This information was made available after an RTI application was filed, so that community members could be informed when they could restart worshipping by the Marine Drive sea-side again.

As per news reports, BMC Chief Engineer of the Coastal Road Project, Mantayya Swami, they had received permission from the Heritage Committee to shift the gate, with architectural drawings being approved. He confirmed that the piling works for the coastal road was currently ongoing and the gate would be placed again by January 2024.
