Dr. Cyres Mehta Awarded ‘Excellence In Research’ At EyeAdvance 2018

On 2nd June, 2018, India’s leading eye specialist and authority, Dr. Cyres K. Mehta was awarded the prestigious Swiss Eye Research Foundation Award for ‘Excellence In Research’. This recognition is bestowed by the Swiss Eye Research Foundation only once every two years, in validation of a volume of significant, published original research done internationally. Dr. Cyres was felicitated with this award at the EyeAdvance 2018 International Congress, a global platform comprising over 1,650 eye surgeons from 32 countries including Germany, USA, UK, Egypt and Hungary. Presenting the award were Prof. Bojan Pajic – Head of the Foundation; Padmashri Dr. Mahipal Sachdev – President of the All India Ophthalmological Society; Prof Beatrice Cochner – President of the European Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery; Padmashri Prof. Dr. Keiki Mehta – Chairman and Founder of EyeAdvance; and Padmashri Dr. T P Lahane – Director, Medical Education and Research, Govt. of Maharashtra.

Speaking to Parsi Times, Dr. Cyres said, “I’m happy that Indian research is being recognised worldwide. This shows that the research we do here and the new surgical techniques we pioneer are being recognised and adopted in Europe as well.” Dr. Cyres has been the pioneer of Non-Penetrating Glaucoma Surgery in India in 2001 as also the Robotic Cataract Laser Surgery (FLACS) in Mumbai in 2015 and was one of the early adopters in Mumbai of ‘SMILE – the minimally invasive flapless laser vision correction procedure.

The Congress was inaugurated by the Governor of Maharashtra, Vidyasagar Rao and Head of Dr. DY Patil University, Vijay Patil. EyeAdvance was established 24 years ago by Dr. Keiki Mehta and is considered the best Eye Conference in India because of its emphasis on foreign participation in huge numbers and on its motto, ‘Something New, Something Fresh’.

Over the years, Dr. Cyres Mehta has been repeatedly doing our nation and our community proud with his consistent efforts, scientific breakthroughs and numerous awards – national and global. Serving as a great source of inspiration for the community, when asked about his mantra of success and staunch dedication, he replies, “Keep trying! Keep learning! Keep teaching! That is the only way forward…”
