Vidarbha Win Irani Cup 2019: Having won the Ranji Trophy title earlier, skipper Faiz Fazal, Coach Chandrakant Pandit and Team Vidarbha won the Irani Cup on virtue of first innings lead against Rest of India (ROI) at Nagpur. Electing to bat first ROI scored 330 in 89.4 overs during their first innings, courtesy an outstanding 114 from Hanuma Vihari and a great 95 from Mayank Agarwal. For Vidarbha, Aditya Sarwate and Akshay Wakhare snapped up three wickets each. In reply, Vidarbha showed great character after being reduced to 226-6 at one stage. Man of the Match Akshay Karnewar stood like a wall for his side, contributing an important 102 while Akshay Wadkar made 73 and opener Sanjay Raghunath notched up a valuable 65. Amongst the ROI bowlers, Rahul Chahar was the most successful with (4-112) in 40 overs. During their second innings, ROI were on top of their game as yet again Hanuma Vihari remained unbeaten on 180 with 19 fours and four sixes, skipper Ajinkya Rahane stood out for his vital 87 and Shreyas Iyer smashed 61 off just 52 balls. In the end they declared at 374-3 in 107 overs. Vidarbha finished with 269-5 as Ganesh Satish (87) and Atharwa Taide (72) ensured their team a mighty win.

Mumbai Beat Sikkim: Mushtaq Ali Opening: A phenomenal performance by Shreyas Iyer (147 off 55) and Suryakumar Yadav (63 off 33) helped Mumbai start the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign on a winning note, beating Sikkim by 154 runs. Mumbai posted 258-4 in 20 overs. Shreyas smashed seven fours and 15 huge sixes en-route his century while Surya hit eight fours and two sixes. Sikkim faltered and couldn’t recover, thus collapsing at 104-7 in 20 overs. Shams Mulani and Shardul Thakur grabbed two wickets each.

 

FOOTBALL

FA Cup Results: On 16th February, Brighton and Hove Albion won 2-1 V/s Derby County; Millwall clinched a 1-0 victory V/s AFC Wimbledon while Manchester City overpowered opponents Newport County with a 4-1 win. The following day, Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Bristol City 1-0, Crystal Palace put their best foot forward clinching the match 2-0 against Doncaster Rovers while Swansea City beat rivals Brentford 4-1. 18th February saw Manchester United snap a 2-0 victory against Chelsea.

 

BOXING

Indian Women Shine In Bulgaria: Former junior world champion Nikhat Zareen and Meena Kumari Devi became the first Indian women boxers to clinch gold medals at the Strandja Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria. Zareen claimed a 5-0 victory during the final in the 51 kg category against Filipino Irish Magno while Meena overpowered Aira Villegas 3-2 from Philippines in the 54 kg summit clash.
