There’s No Winners In War

Dear Readers,

Even as the world is still reeling under the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the unprecedented and sudden attack by Hamas on Israel, last Saturday, left us all in shock and disbelief. Even for those aware of the long-standing military tension between Palestine and Israel in the Gaza Strip, this massive attack was a major surprise as was Israel’s consequential declaration of ‘War’ on Palestine.

But there are no winners in war. Ever. Everyone loses – the military, the government, most of all the innocent people. The reasons might even make sense but the consequences make none. Whether one is fighting to defend the security of one’s state or the integrity of one’s nation, or then retaliating to threats of terror, the collateral damage is incalculable, with helpless citizens emerging as the biggest losers. It’s gut-wrenching to see their homes, means of livelihood and hearts pulverized by heavy bombings and endless destruction – but most of all, the grief of losing their loved ones.

There are no winners in armed conflicts – both sides suffer their respective tragedies. Until we are intelligent enough to identify the lethal danger associated with a lack of respect and compassion for each other as one species, before identifying as ‘patriotic citizens’ of any nation, war and bloodshed will stand justified… along with hatred, anger and spite. And there will be no end to wars. And as long as there are wars, everybody loses, nobody wins.

These are times when dark clouds rule, with a rare glimmer of silver linings. These are times of chaos, and it is in these times, more than ever, that we need to raise falling levels of human consciousness with our thoughts, words, deeds and prayers. Let us fervently pray for those caught in this nightmare of war, in our belief that peace will be restored once again, and in our faith that good will vanquish evil, that right will prevail over wrong and love will win over hatred and war.

Have a good weekend!
