Navsari Holds Zoroastrian Volleyball Championship 2024

The Zoroastrian Volleyball Championship 2024 was organised on 13th April, 2024, by the Ava Baug Cricket Club, in Navsari. Sponsored by the Parsi Cultural Division of the S B Garda College Trust, Navsari, the day-and-night tournament comprised 9 teams, which were established via an auction conducted two weeks prior to the tournament. The teams saw participation from 63 players, from Bardoli, Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Gandevi and Billimora.

The tourney was a great hit with an attendance of over 200-strong enthusiastic audiences from all age groups, cheering on their favourite teams, through the 36 exciting league matches which were played, besides the thrilling semi-finals and the finals. Team SMASHERS were declared the champions, beating runners-up Team FD STRIKERS.

Eric Bacha, who headed the coordination, shared with Parsi Times, that of the 9 teams, 5 team owners were from Surat, and that they were looking to having more team owners from across India, to participate in the oncoming Zoroastrian Volleyball Championships, next year onwards. The S B Garda Trust announced its decision of holding this tournament every year in Navsari. In his address to the youth, Dara Deboo – Chairman, S B Garda College Trust Navsari, requested the youth to engage more often through sports, which the Trust would willingly sponsor annually. He thanked them for making the event a huge success and also infusing a new life into the old Parsi Clubs of India, like the Mehta Club of Navsari, where the event was held this year. The prestigious 115-year-old Mehta Club, at Lunsikui, Navsari, was earlier used for Parsi gatherings and events around a century ago, and continues to hold Zoroastrian youth activities, for the last 50 years.

Kudos to the Zoroastrian youth of Navsari and Gujarat, and especially to Eric Bacha, Nozer Khan, Kaizad Mirza, Kaivan Patrawala, Baman Bhura and Rony Bhura – for making this exhilarating all-day-and-night volleyball tournament a huge success with their team-work and perseverance.
